Arlington and the Spy Museum
Submitted by bugsly on Friday, January 13, 2006 - 18:51 Car | Core | Subway | Walk | Washington, DC

This morning we went to Arlington Cemetery and saw the massive amount of gravesites there, there were a lot of signs telling us to be quiet and respectful. Especially around Kennedy's grave. We also got to see the change of the guard at the top of the hour, it is amazing to see them march back and forth for an entire hour; until it's time for them to change. We then moved on to the spy museum and got to choose a special cover name and background, we also saw the James Bond car from Goldfinger. The museum was a lot of fun and very interactive, I have to say that this was my favorite museum.

Fun in Washington
Submitted by bugsly on Thursday, January 12, 2006 - 19:21 Core | Subway | Washington, DC

Today we got a very special tour from William, an intern, of the Senate Building and Capitol Building, our guide was great even though it was his first tour. We saw lots of statues and chandeliers; we also got to ride on the underground subway from the Senate Building to the Capitol Building. Once we reached the Capitol we got to see the enormous dome that, evidently, can hold the Lady Liberty with room to spare! I thought that the paintings and murals in there were very extravagant and marvellous, along with some of the sculptures.

We then split up, Michael and my Dad going to the Air and Space Museum, and my Mom and I to the National Cathedral. The National Cathedral was very big, in fact from the entrance, to the very tip of the Cathedral was about one tenth of a mile! The whole inside of the Cathedral is in the shape of a cross, although they promote it as a worship space for any faith, there are also hundreds of stained glass windows. The largest stained glass window has more than 10,000 individual pieces of glass in it, when you look from afar you can see that the pictures inside it depict the creation of the earth. I have to say that the Cathedral was very fun to see and learn about, also to learn about its construction for more than 100 years.

Finally, my Mom and I headed down to the Air and Space Museum, where we met up with my brother and my Dad and we all headed back to the Hotel for an hour or so. After our little break we went to the Lincoln Memorial at night and saw it even though the statue of President Lincoln was being restored and had scaffoldings all around it. We also saw the Reflecting Ponds in front of the Washington Memorial. I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow for another day of Washington fun.

A fun day with friends
Submitted by bugsly on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 19:14 Core | Walk | Washington, DC

Today we started out as soon as we hooked up with my mom's old work friend Jamie, and her daughter Tessa, we all had a lot of fun together. We decided to start off at the Washington National Zoo, we saw some cuddly animals like the Giant Panda's and the Naked Mole Rats(haha! Just kidding!) and some not so cuddly ones either like the Alligators and the Naked Mole Rats (haha! Not kidding!). A special animal we saw was the endangered Komodo Dragon (If you've ever seen the movie "The Freshman" then you know what lizard I'm talking about), this lizard is huge. This lizard is at least six feet long and has a tongue almost as long!

After the zoo we headed down to the National Archives, there we saw the Constitution, the Bill Of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. We also saw an amazing mural with lots of famous people on it like: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and many more. We also saw how the Archives organizes and preserves the documents, by keeping them out of the sun, keeping them flat, etc.

We then stopped for a drink at Starbucks, and then said our goodbyes. I have to say that today really was interesting and fun.

Washington D.C.
Submitted by bugsly on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 - 19:06 Core | Life Sciences | Subway | Walk | Washington, DC

Today we took half the day off, just laying around and doing our work. I on the other hand, I finished my homework and spun quarters with my brother, built half a house of cards, and did some laundry.

We all decided to head out around at about 2:30, so we went to the Museum of Natural History (bear with me I'm still figuring out how to load pictures). We saw a lot, and by that I mean a lot, of prehistoric age fossils, bone structures, and gems. We also saw the Hope Diamond, which looks smaller than the Tiffany Diamond, but is much more expensive. The museum closed before we finished, so we then headed down to see the White House. After a lot of walking we finally made it there. I have to tell you that it is big, but it looks bigger in the pictures.

To conclude our day we went to a nice western diner type restaurant and had a nice meal to end our day.
