Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Flying into Israel

Last night we arrived late on a train into Barcelona, we arrived at our hotel that is right next to the airport. The weather was fairly warm and there was even a warm breeze too. We crashed, exhausted until we woke up in the morning to go to the airport. About three hours later we boarded the plane and flew off to Tel Aviv, Israel.

Upon landing we went through a large amount of security before we could claim our bags and then went through more with them. Finally we reached the foreign passport control booth where we were questioned suspiciously and then ushered on. We pushed our way through the crowds of waiting people and then into a taxi which took us to Rehovot, a town right outside Tel Aviv where we have our cousins Igal and Anat and their kids who aren't there but hospitably offered us their home. Also their Golden Retriever, Milky, welcomed us too!

After settling in we sat back and relaxed for the rest of the day because we were sooooooo tired!
