The Sistine Chapel, Being Pickpocketed and the Train to Florence

Today my mom and Michael and I went straight to the Basilica after lunch (at McDonald's!!!) to tour the Grotto below the sanctuary. That is the place where they bury Popes including the recently deceased John Paul II. I was impressed by how close the gravesites of the Popes were to each other. The new one for Pope John Paul II had fresh flowers around it and lit candles. There were two guards on either side of his grave and they ushered visitors by at a comfortable pace.

One thing that was a surprise to me is that Saint Peter is honored and buried in teh Grotto. The chapel that contained his remains was a large deep space with a beautiful box that held his remains.

After we left the Basilica, we walked as fast as we could to the Vatican Museum. We got there five minutes before closing time, bought our tickets and headed on in. We walked through countless galleries full of amazing artifacts from ancient Christiandom. Eventually we found ourselves entering the Sistine Chapel. Upon entering, we were amazed to see a room full of Michaelangelo's art. I now knew why people called it Michaelangelo's life devotion. I told my mom that if I was a Cardinal, it would be easy to sit in that room for weeks because wherever I looked there would be something new and beautiful to contemplate.

After that, we hoofed it to the metro so we could meet my dad to make our train to Florence. In our rush and back at the train station in Rome, as we went up an escalator, my mom felt as if the woman behind her was standing too close. When we got off of the escalator, they disappeared quickly and my mom saw that her backpack had been opened. Luckily though, they hadn't had the time to take anything. After it was over, I realized just how low people can get when it comes to stealing.

We made our train and headed onward to Florence. We arrived in the early evening to be greeted by my dad's friend PierFrancesco who graciously drove us to the apartment where we will be staying for the next two weeks.

Tired and sleepy, we went to bed.
